Deteriorating Road Conditions cause 22% increase in Alloy Wheel Repairs
The deteriorating state of the UKs roads has led to a dramatic increase in Alloy Wheel Repairs at the UKs leading SMART Repairer, Revive! UK. The company saw nearly a 10% increase in wheel repair sales in 2024, with many blaming the poor road conditions for the damage they incurred. The government had pledged a further £500m to tackle potholes on UK roads, however industry experts claim this falls far below the £16 billion required to tackle the issues.
Often damage occurs to alloy wheels when stones or grit is thrown up by other road users, this can scratch or chip the wheel. This is worsened by potholes which can cause the vehicles tyre to deform to such an extent that the alloy scrapes the tarmac, or even just the edge of the pothole. Revive! also sees a significant amount of wheels damaged by kerbs. This can happen when a driver misjudges a parking or turning manoeuvre and accidentally strikes the kerb. Due to the close contact of such an action this can result in the face of the alloy taking the brunt of the impact, leading to a significantly damaged appearance.
Revive! have also reported that the UKs roads have been so much of a problem for so long that their alloy wheel repair customers have grown by 22% since 2021, making up 27% of the company’s workload in 2024 alone.
If your alloy wheels become damaged due to hitting a pothole, not only will this affect the overall cosmetic appearance of your car, but damaged alloy wheels could cause issues in terms of losing traction and control, as well as loss of tyre pressure. Revive!’s figures found that the UKs biggest hotspot for potholes was Surrey, with an astonishing one in twenty of the UKs potholes being in the county.
Not to be underestimated, aside from the safety aspects of damaged alloy wheels is the damage to the value of a vehicle. Many used car buyers look for any and all negative aspects of a vehicle as either a negotiation tactic or to convince them to not go through with a purchase altogether. This means that any damage to a wheel can result in significant losses to revenue, often more than the cost of the repair itself.
Revive! encourages all road users to inspect their vehicles regularly for any signs of damage, as neglecting this could result in larger bills later on.
