Road Safety Knowledge at an all-time low according to new findings

Frightening new statistics recently revealed that there is a startling lack of road safety knowledge among UK drivers, with just 2% able to pass a standard UK Theory test.

A nationally representative survey of 2,004 people conducted by car finance app Carmoola explored driving knowledge by asking questions from the official DVSA theory test. To pass in the UK, learner drivers must achieve a mark of 43 out of 50; the results from the survey revealed an average test score of just 31 out of 50.

These shocking statistics show an increasing lack of knowledge on current driving laws, regulations and guidelines as stated by the UK Highway Code. It also adds legitimacy to calls for increased testing for drivers as they progress through their driving careers.

A worrying 76% of respondents were unaware of how they could reduce their fuel consumption, with 71% also unaware of who the most vulnerable road users were. While two thirds of drivers were unsure on how to avoid wheelspin while driving on icy roads, a particular concern as we head into the winter months.

Of the 2,594,741 theory tests conducted in 2023, 1,173,545 passed successfully, resulting in a 45% pass rate. Significantly better than those driving on the roads everyday, proving that regular revision of the highway code could significantly benefit the driving standards of UK road users.

Revive! would strongly recommend regularly reviewing the Highway Code for all drivers, not just those undergoing training. The resulting improvements in driver safety could make the UK a global leader in driving standards and bring significant safety improvements for all road users.

Revive! recommends the following to brush up on your driving skills:

  • Take Practice Tests: Online theory test simulators and apps can help you spot knowledge gaps. You can find a theory test simulator on the Gov.uk website.
  • Review the Highway Code: Stay familiar with key rules and road signs.
  • Learn Car Basics: Brush up on simple maintenance like tyre checks and fuel efficiency tips.
  • Use Learning Apps: Apps make it easy to review traffic laws and driving tips on the go.
  • Stay Updated: Keep track of new road laws and driving regulations.

Drivers with less experience/confidence are prone to be involved in an increased number of accidents, be it minor parking prangs or more significant crashes. Less experienced drivers must utilise the assets on offer to them from their driving instructors to their theory test revision, to ensure they maintain the high driving standards that are required for traversing UK roads.

If you do get into any minor parking problems, do not hesitate to get in touch with Revive!, who will be more that happy to make your car look as good as new.
