The Coventry Blaze Winning Streak comes to an end

Revive! sponsored Coventry Blaze saw a pair of games over the weekend, with mixed fortunes taking place on the ice. The Blaze’s first game of the weekend was an away contest against the Manchester Storm, with their Sunday game bringing them home to the Skydome to face the Belfast Giants.

Manchester Storm vs Coventry Blaze

The first game of the weekend got off to a hot start, with the homegrown Manchester Storm powering two goals past Blaze keeper Mat Robson in just 9 minutes, at the sticks of Jake Durflinger and Grant Hebert. It looked like the Blaze would be 3 goals down with just 5 minutes left in the period, however Blaze coach Kevin Moore successfully challenged the goal for goaltender interference.

The Blaze made a strong counterattack into the second period, determined to maintain their winning ways. Associate Captain Bandon Alderson finally broke through the Storm defence to power through an excellent goal at the 28-minute mark. The Blaze were on fire for the second period finally drawing level with the Storm at the 35 minute mark with Estonian Morten Jurgens scoring for the first time this season. Keen to break the stalemate quickly Jackson Cressey took the Blaze into the lead in the closing minutes of the second period with a goal at 38 minutes.

The Blaze kept the pedal for the final period, with no end in sight. Grayson Constable started the onslaught with a goal fired past the Storms keeper during the 44th minute. Keen to get in on the action Zack Heintz capitalised on a loose puck, expertly beating the Storm keeper and powering it home for a fifth goal to the Blaze. The Blaze added a sixth goal in spectacular fashion. After dodging a big mid-ice hit, Nick Seitz scored a final goal for the Blaze leading them to a 6-2 victory.

Coventry Blaze vs Belfast Giants

The Blaze were on a high after their victory in Manchester, all for it to come crashing down at the hands of the Belfast Giants. Both teams were fiercely competitive from the outset with each eager to press their advantage early on in the contest. It was the Giants that scored first though, with a Scott Conway goal slipping past the Blaze keeper at the 11-minute mark. Coventry were eager to equalise but failed to do so, with Belfast Giants pressing their advantage and reaching the net for a second time at the 18 minute point from the stick of JJ Piccinich.

Piccinich struck again in the second period, leading to a 0-3 lead at the 28-minute mark with the Blaze with seemingly no answer to the Giants attacks. Chase Gresock did manage to mount a counterattack with a goal at the 29-minute mark, with Morten Jurgens quickly following up with a second, seemingly staging the much-needed comeback for the Blaze.

The Blaze momentum was short lived however, with the final period being Piccinich’s stage to perform on, claiming his hattrick just 1 minute in. To cap off the scoring in the final minutes Bo Hanson slotted the puck into the net from the blue line, leading to the Blaze’s first defeat in the Elite Series this year, 2-5.
