Less than 3% of England’s road network saw any repairs in 2024

Revive! have spoken many times about the overall conditions of UK roads, with potholes, cracks and just general poor road conditions significantly damaging drivers’ vehicles. Not just cosmetically though, while Revive! can bring your scratched and scraped alloys to pristine condition this is only an aesthetic fix, UK roads are causing costly damage to vehicles suspension, steering and wheels including cracked springs, broken ball joints and smashed alloys.

A frightening statistic revealed by the RAC this week is that less than 3-percent of England’s council-run road network received any form of maintenance in the 2023/24 financial year. What is perhaps even more shocking is that this was actually an improvement on the previous year.

Newly released government data shows that of the 183,054 miles of England’s council-run road network, just 4,894 miles were strengthened, resurfaced or preserved. Meaning the rest was left to deteriorate crack and crumble, leaving a pothole infested ticking time bomb for councils to face at a later date.

Revive! previously reported on the increase in the UK’s road repair funding in November 2024, shortly after the Labour budget was announced. However, despite a £500M increase in funding to £1.6B, industry experts predicted that this will barely scratch the surface of the UKs road issues. At the time they estimated that £16B would be required to bring our roads back up to standard.

This will be disappointing news for the UK’s forlorn drivers who will be faced with seemingly unending pothole problems and little to no road repairs in sight. Last year Revive! reported a staggering 58 per cent increase in demand for its alloy wheel repair services over the past two years making up 41% of the company’s business, numbers that are likely to increase should conditions continue to deteriorate.
