Coventry Blaze Triumphant in season opener

Revive! sponsored Coventry Blaze were triumphant in their season opener against Scottish side the Glasgow Clan on Sunday, taking home a valuable two points in the Elite Ice Hockey League. Continuing their success from their series of pre-season games the Blaze came out 4-2 in the contest held at the Skydome Arena in Coventry.

Despite fierce competition, the first period remained goalless even with numerous time on the powerplay for both teams. Early into the second period the Blaze broke the stalemate with a magnificent goal from centreman Mike Regush. Seeming to have finally found the knack to break the Clan’s defence, another goal for the Blaze slid between the posts just two and a half minutes later, this time courtesy of Nick Seitz (this was also Seitz first professional goal).

At the beginning of the final period, Deven Sideroff was sent to the penalty box for a high sticking double minor which resulted in the Blaze’s Alexander Kuqali needing medical treatment. The Blaze pushed their man advantage with Alessio Luciani firing a third goal into the back of the Clans net.

The Glasgow Clan pulled out all the stops in the closing stages of the final period with Cole Ully beating the Blaze’s Mat Robson in a one-on-one to finally get the Scottish side out of the starting blocks. The Clan later pulled their goalie to create a two-man advantage and capitalised by slotting a second goal into the Blaze’s net, bringing the score to 3-2.

With the Clan pulling their goalie for a second time hoping to gain the advantage again in the closing moments of the contest, the Blaze made them regret it with a tremendous goal that travelled the entire length of the ice from defenseman David Clements and with only 31 seconds remaining, this was the final nail in the coffin for the Glasgow Clan, final score 4-2.

Coventry Blaze will next be taking on the Nottingham Panthers in the start of their Challenge Cup campaign on 21st September at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham. This is certainly going to be an exciting match as the Blaze aim to continue their winning streak.
