Coventry Blaze steam ahead against Grand Slam Champions Sheffield Steelers
The Revive! sponsored Coventry Blaze took on 2023s Grand Slam champions the Sheffield Steelers on Sunday. This fierce contest saw the Blaze come out victorious at the Skydome Arena in Coventry.
Getting off to a slow start the Blaze let a goal through just two minutes into the contest but battled back to equalise just four minutes later with a goal from Associate Captain Brandon Alderson. The tension between the two young sides was clearly evident, with two Steelers and Jackson Cressey for the Blaze picking up penalties for roughing towards the end of the first period, they were joined by Alderson for boarding, and Mike Kennedy for a check to the head. The Steelers failed to press their advantage however and both teams left for the locker room to cool down at the end of the first period with the score still 1-1.
The second period saw both goal tenders working hard, with shots flying at both ends of the ice. Unluckily for the Blaze Matt Robson let one in just two minutes before the end of the period leading to a 2-1 deficit as they went into the final 20 minutes.
Just two minutes into the final period, man of the match Jakob Stridsberg slotted the equaliser into the Steelers net, possibly revenge for the previous check to the head that he received and saw Sheffield’s Daniel Ciampini catch a penalty. Just one minute later the Blaze took the lead with a goal from Chase Gresock.
Sheffield attempted to equalise but were thwarted by the talented Robson forming a wall in front of the Blaze’s net. In the closing stages of the final period captain Kim Tallberg fed newcomer Zach Heintz a lovely pass which allowed the rookie to score his first professional goal leading to a 4-2 victory for the Coventry Blaze and marking a 2-game winning streak for the start of their Elite League Campaign.
