Coventry Blaze remains undefeated as their pre-season games come to a close

As the new season approaches, the fantastic Revive! sponsored Coventry Blaze took to the ice for a series of pre-season games to get back in the groove following the summer break. The Blaze took on a number of opponents completely new to the young team including a pair of teams from continental Europe.

Coventry Blaze vs Milton-Keynes Lightening

Coventry Blaze opened their pre-season friendlies with a match against the Milton-Keynes Lightening. An exciting contest throughout, the Blaze made a powerful start, scoring four goals within the first 10 minutes of the game. Not to be underestimated, the Lightening countered with a goal of their own at the 15-minute mark. But the Blaze wouldn’t be denied their victory as by the end of the second period they had stretched the score to 9-2. To put the cherry on top the Blaze snatched another final goal in the third period to take victory 10-2, starting their win streak.

Coventry Blaze vs Essen Moskitos

For Coventry Blaze’s match against German side the Essen Moskitos, Coach Kevin Moore enlisted the help of club legend Russell Crowley to make a special appearance on the ice to mark the 20th anniversary of Coventry’s Grand Slam Season. In similar fashion to the Blaze’s previous performance, they set a blistering pace scoring their first goal in under five minutes from the stick of Jackson Cressey. In a much more competitive contest than the previous game the Blaze managed to push to 4 goals by the end of the first period. The Moskitos gave their best in the second period, managing to claw back 2 goals but the Blaze weren’t to be denied on their home turf and picked up a further 2 goals in the closing stages of the final period with the score being 6-3 to the Blaze.

Coventry Blaze vs Kyiv Capitals

The Blaze got off to a troublesome start against the Kyiv Capitals as penalties became a theme for the first 20-minute period, at one point the Capitals were playing with a 5 on 3 advantage and justifiably opened the scoring early into the contest. Two further penalties prevented the Blaze from really getting a grip on the ice and they left the first period goalless for the first time in this pre-season campaign. The second period however saw a turning of the tide with a hat-trick of goals going to the Blaze courtesy of American, Chase Gresock, seeing them take the lead in the match. With just 4 minutes of the third and final period remaining, the Blaze increased their lead to 5-2 with goals from Jackson Cressey and Morten Jurgens. Final score, 5-2 to the Blaze.

Coventry Blaze vs Kyiv Capitals II

Wrapping up their pre-season campaign the Blaze faced the Capitals again just 24 hours later, with a number of team changes on both sides this was still set to be an exciting contest. The Blaze managed to sneak ahead in the first period with 2 goals within the first 6 minutes, followed by a second goal by Mike Kennedy, setting up the Blaze for a 3-0 lead at the close of the first period. Coventry piled on the pressure for the young Ukrainian keeper as the Blaze increased their lead to 9-0 in the second period. The final period continued the Blaze’s domination of the tired Capitals side with a further three goals going in the net, leading to a victory of 12-0 to Coventry Blaze, maintaining their winning streak ahead of the new season.

At the close of the contest the two teams came together to share a handshake, with the crowd in the Skydome standing to applaud the Ukranian side. During the weekend the Blaze supported the Capitals efforts to raise funds to purchase essential hockey equipment for developing players attending Kryzhynka Kids Hockey School. A very worthy cause that raised £500 across the two nights of Ice hockey.
