Two thirds of drivers back mandatory retesting of senior drivers

A recent survey completed by Car insurance comparison site Uswitch has found that two thirds of UK drivers would back mandatory retesting of senior drivers. Common concerns raised as part of the survey were older drivers slower reaction times, sight issues and overall deteriorating health.

Currently there is no defined law for what age a person must give up their driving license, in fact as recent as 2022 the Mirror revealed there were over 500 centenarians with driving licences still on the roads and over 133,000 drivers over 90 years of age. While drivers over 70 must renew their licenses every 3 years, there is no testing procedure required to renew it.

The generation that supported retesting the most was millennials, with 79% of respondents in support of the idea. When asked what age respondents thought senior drivers should retest, the most popular age range selected was 70-74 (33%). Additionally, almost half (49%) think senior drivers should have to retake every 2-3 years, and only 4% think they should only have to retake their test once.

Of those senior drivers over 60, who have retaken their test voluntarily in later life only 35% managed to pass the standard UK driving test. Another shocking statistic that would likely decrease further still should mandatory retesting be introduced.

When looking at safety and road rules, the most common driving offences committed by motorists aged over 60 involve speeding. Between 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2024, the top offences for this age group were exceeding the statutory speed limit on a public road (75%) and exceeding speed limit on a motorway (15%). They were responsible for one in five (22%) of these two offences overall
