The average car in the UK is the oldest it has ever been

It’s common to think that modern Britain is always after the newest of the new, to keep up with trends and maintain its hold as one of the key global style centres, this includes fashion, technology, entertainment and for a long-time cars. However recent data revealed by the RAC Foundation has found that the average car in the UK is now nearly 10 years old, the oldest it has ever been.

As of the end of 2024, the average car on the country’s roads was 9 years and 10 months old, this is up from 7 years and 5 months, at the end of 2015. When looked at by fuel type it also showed that drivers were much keener to hold on to their conventionally fuelled vehicles rather than moving over to more efficient plug-in hybrids and electric cars. The average age of ICE vehicles in the UK was 10.25 years (Petrol: 10 Years 4 Months – Diesel: 10 Years 1 Month) meanwhile clean energy vehicles averaged just 3 years old (Plug in Hybrid: 3 Years 4 Months – Pure Battery Electric: 2 Years 6 Months).

There are a number of key reasons the UK car parc has aged so quickly, number 1 being the massive development in technology and engineering that has taken place. Vehicles are far more advanced than they have ever been, meaning reliability has improved, as has the refinement. Meaning drivers are feeling far less pressured to renew their vehicles as they age. While there are still many who jump at the chance to replace there car as soon as the new number plates are released each March and September, these numbers are dwindling.

One of the other reasons drivers are holding on to there vehicles longer is the general uncertainty when it comes to future technology vehicles. There are some who are diving in at the ground level as the technology is becoming more prevalent, but many are holding out to see what happens when the Climate Change Committee’s 2030 emission reduction deadline runs out. Once the government and manufacturers position has been agreed it is far more likely that older conventionally fuelled vehicles will gradually be phased out.
