Rear-End Collision proves to be the most common accident in the UK

New research has shown that the most common road accident in the UK is the simple rear end collision with nearly a quarter of all collisions occurring at the back of a vehicle.

According to the data recently published by accident aftercare specialist AX, rear end collisions accounted for 22.45% of all road incidents among UK drivers. Revive!’s own research data proves not too dissimilar from their statistics, with 18.38% of repairs performed by our technicians happening on vehicle bumpers.

The AX report goes on to reveal that the second most common collision was vehicles being hit while parked and unattended, this was stated as being 21.8% of accidents. Since the widespread introduction of parking sensors and the more recent implementation of automated braking systems it might be expected that other common accident types would have been higher on the list but other accident types paled in comparison, with Roundabout accidents measuring just 7.35%, Lane Change accidents sitting at 7.07% and cars pulling out of side roads sitting at just 9.64%.

Recently Revive! backed up a report by the Association of Fleet Professionals that claimed ADAS is contributing to a rise in minor collisions. “Drivers are starting to rely on technology more than their own skills and knowledge. This will inevitably lead to more accidents at increasing speeds as more and more control is taken from the driver to improve safety. Now ADAS has become mandated in most vehicles it will become more and more prevalent.” Mark Llewellyn, Managing Director of Revive! commented at the time.

A follow-up report by Venson Automotive Solutions found that less than half of motorists were given instructions on the ADAS features in their new vehicles by dealers. Meaning many drivers were unsure how their vehicles would react when facing an accident.

Simon Staton, client management director, Venson Automotive Solutions, said: “Manufacturers invest heavily in developing advanced safety technology, so there must be effective handover training and online content available, not just for drivers, but fleet teams and health and safety representatives too. This would help to ensure that the technology is not only understood but also put to the most effective use possible.”
