Practically perfect: How a 2-year-old car is still topping sales charts
With the latest release of the SMMT data for Used cars sold in 2025, we see that the Ford Fiesta has topped the chart yet again and not by a small margin. Marking it’s 16th year as the bestselling used car the Ford Fiesta outsold its closest competition, the Vauxhall Corsa by over 55,000 cars. All of this despite going out of production in July 2023. 303,090 Fiestas were sold in 2025, five and a half time more than the Ford Puma that replaced it. But how is an at minimum two year old car still maintaining its spot as the bestselling car in Britain?

Reliability
Generally, the reliability of the Ford Fiesta is commendable, and expected with the car being so popular, however as per WhatCar? “Models built before December 2019 can suffer from issues with the oil-lubricated “wet belt” timing belt, which can degrade prematurely if maintenance hasn’t been meticulous, potentially leading to serious engine damage if it fails.” This has caused a lot of upset in the automotive community with thousands claiming issues with the ‘wet belt’ system and the destruction of their engines. Despite this though, the Fiesta is a very reliable car and is capable of impressive longevity through regular maintenance and servicing.
Easy to drive
“The Ford Fiesta is a top choice among small cars, praised for its engaging driving experience, decent equipment and diverse engine options.” This has made the little Fiesta a popular choice among first time drivers and enthusiasts alike, who appreciate the drivability and engagement the precise handling delivers.
Value for money
Cheap to run and insure the Ford Fiesta is the go-to runabout for new drivers and anyone not covering significant mileage. The cheap super mini takes pride of place as the market leader and offers far more to owners than the initial price tag would suggest, providing a practical and engaging ownership experience that Ford has struggled to replicate in passing years.
Quality preparation
Of course, its well known the best way to make money out of a car is to make sure the vehicle is presented well and advertised accurately. With Fiestas now starting to age in the market ensuring they are free from scratches and scrapes is paramount to getting the best price for the vehicle. a minor scrape can go a long way towards minimising the profitability for used car dealerships. By utilising Smart repairs to remove scuffs, scratches and dents on bodywork and alloys, dealers can add thousands to the list price – in today’s marketplace, there’s no excuse for putting a damaged car up for sale.
